Understanding Material Tonnage

In the construction and landscaping industries, a common disconnect exists between how materials are measured on blueprints versus how they are sold at the quarry. Excavators measure holes in cubic yards (volume), but quarries sell stone, sand, and soil by the ton (weight). The Tonnage Calculator bridges this gap, providing instant, bidirectional conversions for over 20 different common materials.

Whether you need to know how many truckloads of dirt equal a 100-yard excavation or how many cubic yards of gravel are in a 20-ton delivery, this tool gives you the answers based on industry-standard material densities.

How Density Determines Weight

The core of this calculation is density—how tight the material packs together. This varies wildly:

  • Mulch: Very light (~500-800 lbs/yd³). A standard pickup truck can easily carry 2-3 yards without exceeding payload limits.
  • Topsoil: Moderately heavy (~2,000-2,400 lbs/yd³). Moisture content plays a huge role here; wet soil can weigh 30-40% more than dry soil.
  • Gravel & Stone: Heavy (~2,700-3,000 lbs/yd³). A half-ton pickup truck is typically maxed out with just 0.5 to 0.75 cubic yards of stone.
  • Wet Sand: Surprisingly dense (>3,000 lbs/yd³) because water fills the tiny voids between grains, making it heavier than dry solid concrete in some cases.

Safety Warning: GVWR and Payloads

Critical Safety Rule: Never guess when loading a truck.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): The maximum legal weight of your truck + cargo + passengers.
Payload Capacity: GVWR minus the empty truck weight.
Example: If your truck has a 1,500 lb payload, you cannot legally (or safely) carry 1 full cubic yard of gravel (which weighs ~2,800 lbs). You would be nearly double your limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does wet sand weigh more than dry sand? +

Dry sand has air gaps between the grains. When wet, water (which is heavy) displaces that air and fills every void. Since water weighs ~8.3 lbs per gallon, a cubic yard of sand can gain hundreds of pounds just from rain saturation.

What is a "loose" vs "compacted" yard? +

A "loose" yard is material that has been fluffed up (excavated) or dumped from a truck. A "compacted" yard (bank yard) is material that has been mechanically tampered or heavily compressed in the ground. Soil expands (bulks) by 20-30% when dug out of the ground.

How many tons are in a dump truck? +

It varies entirely by truck size. A standard single-axle dump truck carries roughly 5-7 tons. A tandem (double-axle) dump truck carries 12-15 tons. A tri-axle can carry 18-22 tons. Always confirm with your local hauler.

Can I calculate tonnage for asphalt? +

Yes. Hot mix asphalt typically weighs about 145-150 lbs per cubic foot (or roughly 2 tons per cubic yard). Our calculator includes a specific preset for asphalt to help estimate paving jobs.

What is the difference between a Short Ton and a Long Ton? +

A Short Ton (US Standard) is 2,000 lbs. A Long Ton (UK Imperial) is 2,240 lbs. A Metric Tonne is 1,000 kg (~2,204 lbs). The construction industry in the US almost exclusively uses Short Tons.
